FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE:

1.) Tax Credit

The federal government offers an adoption tax credit of approximately $10,000 to adoptive families on qualifying expenses paid for a child's adoption. In addition to this some states offer an additional tax credit or income tax deduction for families that have adopted a child. For more information you may visit the IRS website at www.IRS.gov and review publication # 968, or speak with a tax specialist.

2.) Employer Assistance

There are many companies that have Adoption Assistance Programs. Check with your employer's human resource department to see if they offer adoption assistance benefits. You can click on the following link for additional information on how to get your employer on board with provision of adoption assistance benefits: http://www.adopting.org/employer.html

3.) Military Program

For active duty adoptive parents the military will reimburse up to $2,000 on adoption expenses for one child and $5,000 for siblings. Parents must work with a licensed adoption agency, and may file after the adoption is finalized. For more information, adoptive parents may review the Defense Finance Service Instruction Form 1341, call 303-333-0845, or visit the website at : http://military.adoption.com .

4.) Loans and Second Mortgages

Refinance your Home equity loan - If you own your house you may be eligible for a home equity loan, or you may be able to refinance your mortgage. This is typically the lowest-rate loan at a bank. Quite often, the interest is tax-deductible. Also, most banks offer a home equity line-of-credit. You will be given a checkbook you can use to pay expenses as they arise. The check you write will be added to your current loan balance. Ask your bank for details. Rates are usually low and interest tax deductible.

Borrow from your 401-k - Many 401-k plans now offer loans from your retirement savings. This is usually a very-low interest rate. Many people are able to fund their entire adoption from this one loan. Talk to your employer to see if this is an option for you.

5.) Grants and Loans

Here is a list of Internet sites to visit for detailed information on available grants and loans for adoption:

Christian Adoption Resources Inc Prospective Christian adoptive couples may apply for a grant after they have an approved home-assessment by a licensed adoption agency. Grants are generally awarded in $1,000 increments with $5,000 being the largest grant awarded at this time.
